65-Year-Old Alabama Woman Recovering After Heroic Attempt to Save Her Dog

There’s encouraging news this week from Enterprise, Alabama, where 65-year-old Jody Greer is recovering after a severe dog attack that nearly claimed her life.

Last Sunday, Jody heard frantic barking outside her home and rushed to investigate. Her beloved dachshund, Selene, was being attacked by three pit bulls that had escaped from a nearby property. Without hesitation, Jody ran to protect her small dog—a moment of courage that would leave her critically injured.

As she tried to rescue Selene, the pit bulls turned on her. The injuries she sustained were extensive, with deep wounds across much of her body. Emergency responders arrived quickly, and Jody was airlifted to a trauma center in Fort Walton, Florida, where she underwent multiple life-saving procedures.

Her family says the situation was dire. “Jody needed eight liters of blood and hundreds of stitches,” said her son-in-law, Dylan Heselwood. “She suffered severe wounds to her neck, chest, and other areas, but she’s breathing on her own now and is finally in recovery.”

Sadly, Selene did not survive the attack, and the three pit bulls were later euthanized. Despite the tragedy, Jody’s family is extending compassion toward their neighbors, who are also coping with the loss of their pets. “We have no ill will toward them,” Dylan shared. “They’ve always been kind to our family. Remember, they lost their dogs too.”

Jody still faces several surgeries and a long rehabilitation process, but doctors are optimistic that she will make a full recovery. Her strength and determination have deeply moved those following her story.

Dylan hopes that people focus not on blame, but on healing and kindness. “This isn’t about judging a breed,” he said. “Pit bulls can be loving pets. We just want people to keep Jody in their thoughts as she continues to recover.”

Her family says that every message, every prayer, and every word of encouragement helps her take another step toward recovery.
