Hero Dog ‘Samson’ Saves 36 Soldiers in Colombia, Loses a Leg in the Process

The story of a courageous bomb detection dog named Samson is drawing wide attention in Colombia after his actions saved the lives of 36 soldiers during a military operation. Despite losing one leg in the incident, Samson is now being honored as a national symbol of bravery.

According to the Colombian Army’s official social media post on the 16th, the shepherd dog detected an explosive device during an operation in the rural area of Yondó, Antioquia, at around 10 a.m. on the 10th. The device had reportedly been planted along a walking path by the guerrilla group ELN, creating a serious threat to both soldiers and civilians.

Upon discovering the landmine, Samson unintentionally triggered it, causing an immediate detonation. The blast left him gravely injured in one leg. Despite his condition, Samson managed to crawl toward his handler, Sergeant Carlos Beleno, dragging himself across the ground. He was rushed to veterinary care, where surgery saved his life, but one leg had to be amputated.

The Colombian Army praised Samson as “our four-legged hero,” stating: “Although he can no longer serve in active duty, Samson’s courage and selfless spirit will forever remain in the memories of the soldiers he protected.”

The incident occurred only days after another explosion in the same region, where an animal carrying explosives detonated, resulting in the death of one soldier and injuries to two others. Authorities attributed that attack to the same guerrilla group, highlighting the ongoing security challenges in the area.

Now recovering at a military facility, Samson will not return to the battlefield, but his role in preventing a potential tragedy has cemented his legacy. To many in Colombia, Samson is more than just a service dog—he is a living reminder of loyalty, sacrifice, and the profound bond between soldiers and their canine partners.
