Visitor Rescues 375-Pound Bear from Drowning in South Lake Tahoe

A dramatic rescue unfolded beneath the Tallac Bridge in South Lake Tahoe when a 375-pound black bear, sedated and struggling, began to slip under the water. Onlookers watched in shock as the animal’s head dipped dangerously low, each moment more urgent than the last.
The bear had wandered into a nearby neighborhood earlier that day, drawing the attention of residents and wildlife officers. In an effort to safely relocate the animal, officers had sedated it. But before the medicine could fully take effect, the bear stumbled into the cold waters of the lake. As the tranquilizer settled in, its movements slowed, leaving the animal at risk of drowning.

Just as it seemed the situation would turn tragic, a visitor from Russia, Ivan Stepanov, stepped forward. Without hesitation, he removed his shoes, entered the chilly water, and swam toward the struggling bear. Sliding his arms carefully beneath its neck, Ivan lifted its head above the surface, speaking softly in Russian as if to reassure the animal.
The effort was slow and demanding. With every stroke, Ivan worked to guide the heavy bear toward shore. Spectators held their breath, watching as man and animal inched closer to safety. Finally, with a last push, Ivan reached shallow water where wildlife officers were waiting.

Once on land, the bear was quickly attended to. Officers tagged its ear for monitoring, checked its condition, and ensured that it was healthy enough to be released. Later that day, the animal was safely returned to the Sierra Nevada wilderness, far from neighborhoods and traffic.
When asked why he risked his own safety for the animal, Ivan gave a quiet smile. “In my country,” he said, “we believe true strength is shown by who you choose to care for—even when it’s covered in fur.”
