People saved a dog with giant cheeks – and now it is unrecognizable
In the spring of 2019, volunteers from Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL) received a call that would change one little puppy’s life forever. A young dog had been found tied to a fence, visibly hurt and in urgent need of help. Concerned for his safety, the team rushed to the scene.

What they found was more heartbreaking than expected. The puppy’s muzzle was swollen to nearly five times its normal size. “We went to save the dog, but when we first arrived, we didn’t immediately realize it was a dog,” one volunteer explained. His appearance told a story of struggle, yet his eyes still searched for kindness.

The team carefully freed the puppy and transported him to a veterinary clinic, where his long road to healing began. There, he was given a name—Marco. Although no one knew exactly what he had endured before being discovered, his condition made it clear that life had been anything but easy.

Even so, Marco’s spirit shone through. Despite his challenges, he greeted rescuers with warmth. “The most surprising part is that he still loves and trusts people,” the team shared. “He still looks at people with love and is ready to give it back.”

With weeks of treatment and dedicated care, Marco slowly began to recover. The swelling subsided, his strength returned, and soon the playful puppy beneath emerged. His resilience amazed everyone who followed his journey, proving that even in the toughest moments, hope can flourish.

Today, Marco is thriving in his forever home with a loving family and other dogs to keep him company. From the fence where his story nearly ended to the fields where he now runs freely, Marco is a living reminder of how compassion can transform a life.
